Ship faster with blunt metrics
A practical loop for using a small set of honest numbers to make weekly product decisions.
Speed is not about typing faster. It is about deciding faster — and decisions rot when the metrics are polite.
Blunt metrics are numbers you cannot hide behind. They move when the product moves. They embarrass you when the product stalls.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Integer nec odio. Praesent libero. Sed cursus ante dapibus diam. Sed nisi. Nulla quis sem at nibh elementum imperdiet. Duis sagittis ipsum. Praesent mauris. Fusce nec tellus sed augue semper porta.
The weekly loop
Every Monday, before stand-up:
- Write down last week’s three blunt numbers.
- Write one sentence: “We will change X because Y moved.”
- Ship the smallest change that could move Y.
- On Friday, look again. Keep or kill the change.
Quisque volutpat condimentum velit.
No slide deck. No “deep dive next sprint.” If you cannot name the number and the change in one breath, you are not ready to ship.
What makes a metric blunt
- Tied to behaviour you can influence this week
- Visible without opening five tools
- Hard to game without also improving the product
- Owned by a person, not a committee
Class aptent taciti sociosqu ad litora torquent per conubia nostra, per inceptos himenaeos. Curabitur sodales ligula in libero. Sed dignissim lacinia nunc. Curabitur tortor. Pellentesque nibh. Aenean quam. In scelerisque sem at dolor. Maecenas mattis.
Vanity metrics fail the second test. “Total signups” goes up when you buy ads. Activation does not. Retention does not.
Failure mode: too many blunt metrics
Three is a ceiling for the weekly loop. More than that and you are back to a dashboard with better branding.
Sed lectus. Integer euismod lacus luctus magna. Vestibulum ante ipsum primis in faucibus orci luctus et ultrices posuere cubilia Curae; Morbi lacinia molestie dui. Praesent blandit dolor. Sed non quam. In vel mi sit amet augue congue elementum. Morbi in ipsum sit amet pede facilisis laoreet.
Pick three. Ship. Measure. Repeat. That is the whole playbook.
