Cookieless analytics, explained without the legal jargon
How modern analytics can measure real usage without cookies, consent banners, or a meeting with your DPO.
Cookie banners are a symptom. The disease is treating every visitor like a permanent identity you own.
Cookieless analytics flips the model: measure events and aggregates, not people you can re-identify next month.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nam viverra euismod odio, gravida pellentesque urna varius vitae. Sed dui lorem, adipiscing in adipiscing et, interdum nec metus. Mauris ultricies, justo eu convallis placerat, felis enim ornare nisi, vitae mattis nulla ante vitae est.
What “cookieless” actually means
In practice it means:
- No third-party cookies
- No first-party identifiers that survive across sessions unless the user opts in
- IP addresses truncated or hashed at the edge
- Server-side aggregation so raw payloads never sit in a marketing warehouse
Nulla facilisi. Ut fringilla. Suspendisse potenti. Nunc feugiat mi a tellus consequat imperdiet. Vestibulum sapien. Proin quam. Etiam ultrices. Suspendisse in justo eu magna luctus suscipit. Sed lectus. Integer euismod lacus luctus magna.
You still get funnels, retention curves, and “which button got clicked.” You do not get a permanent profile of “User 84921 who visited in March and again in June.”
Consent banners and the law
I am not your lawyer. The point of cookieless design is that in many jurisdictions you can avoid the banner entirely because you are not storing personal data in the first place.
Integer tincidunt. Cras dapibus. Vivamus elementum semper nisi. Aenean vulputate eleifend tellus. Aenean leo ligula, porttitor eu, consequat vitae, eleifend ac, enim. Aliquam lorem ante, dapibus in, viverra quis, feugiat a, tellus. Phasellus viverra nulla ut metus varius laoreet.
Still: check with counsel for your product and region. The technical shape is simple; the legal surface is not.
A practical loop
- Instrument events you care about (signup, activation, purchase).
- Send them without a client-side user id.
- Aggregate on the server by day, cohort, or anonymous session window.
- Export the aggregates. Delete the raw stream on a short TTL.
Quisque rutrum. Aenean imperdiet. Etiam ultricies nisi vel augue. Curabitur ullamcorper ultricies nisi. Nam eget dui.
Duis leo. Sed fringilla mauris sit amet nibh. Donec sodales sagittis magna.
Cookieless is not a feature checkbox. It is a decision to measure behaviour, not to own identity.
